Our event started as The Maine Golf Heritage Scramble six years ago. We changed the name of the tournament to honor two noteworthy golfers and course designers, Arthur Fenn and Donald Ross. Fenn who is recognized by many as America's first golf professional and designer, designed the original nine-hole course at Poland Spring in 1896. Two years later he became the golf pro at Poland Spring and served until his death in 1925. When the resort desired an enlarged course, they turned to Donald Ross to redesign the course in 1912 as an 18-hole beauty which was opened in 1915. The course at Poland Spring is the oldest resort golf course in the United States and is an integral part of Maine’s golf history and United States golf history as well.

We have always worked toward making this an “event”, not just another local golf tournament, and, from participants’ comments who return year after year, we’ve been successful doing so. The Fenn-Ross Cup Heritage Scramble truly is unique, and past tournament participants agree.

There is not another event like it in Maine and probably not vardonanywhere else in the country. We have a piper playing bagpipes for an hour leading up to the tournament’s start, we encourage participants to dress in 20s and 30s era clothes, and every participant is required to hit three shots with hickory shafted golf clubs that we provide and that gives the tournament it’s own special “signature” activity.
